Quark® License Administrator (QLA) helps you get the right Quark software onto
the right desktops at the right time.

New in Quark License Administrator 4.5

Support for Windows Vista

Quark License Administrator now runs on Windows Vista.

Updaters

You can now update Quark License Administrator from version 4.0 or 4.01 to version 4.5.

License usage information

To view information about licenses that have recently been checked in, display the Usage Information Status dialog box (View menu). In this dialog box, the License Usage Information list displays the following information for each license:

  • User name
  • Application name, version, and serial number
  • IP address / host ID
  • Pool type and pool / list name
  • Check-out and check-in date and time
  • License type (regular or extended)

If the application selected in the License Usage Information list has loaded license-controlled XTensions® software, the name, version, and serial number of that XTensions software display in the Included XTensions Software list.

To refresh the information in the Usage Information Status dialog box, click Refresh.

To control how many days worth of license information is displayed in the Usage Information Status dialog box, click Option or choose View > Log Options, then specify a value in the Show license history for days field.

Remote license file notification

When you create a remote license file, e-mail notifications are now automatically sent to the administrator and to the user for whom the remote license file was created. These e-mail notifications indicate the length of time for which the remote license file is valid and include the e-mail address of the administrator.

Backup server time limit

You can now set the number of days a backup server will continue to grant licenses if the primary server stops responding. The default value is 5 days, the minimum value is 1 day, and the maximum value is 15 days. To set this parameter, change the BACK_UP_AGE_DAYS value in the "Failover.properties" file on the backup server.

Server failure notification

When a QLA server stops responding, an e-mail notification is automatically sent to the administrator. This notification indicates the following:

  • When the server went down
  • Whether the server was a backup server
  • If the server was a primary server, the number of days the backup server is configured to grant licenses
  • The serial number and runcount maintained by the servers
  • The IP address, host ID, and port number of both the primary and backup servers

IP address, host ID, and port number

To download a license file, you must supply the IP address, host ID, and port number of the machine where QLA will run). These values now display in the Computer Specifications screen during installation, allowing you to copy and paste the information into your Web browser. These values are also stored in the "MachineInfo.txt" file, which is located in the QLA Server application folder.

Assign software licenses

QLA provides complete control over when, where, and how users access Quark products. Assign licenses to specific high-priority users, groups of users, or computers to guarantee access to Quark products. Licenses can also be held in a reserve pool and assigned to users on a first-come, first-served basis, so that occasional users will also be able to access Quark products when necessary.

Run QuarkXPress no matter what

Network failure is always a possibility, but with QLA you have several options to help keep QuarkXPress up and running throughout the duration of network or server failures.

  • Emergency key launch
Through a simple key command you can run QuarkXPress for up to 120 hours without connecting to the QLA server. This provides ample time for your IT staff to rectify any network or server issues which prevent users from connecting to the QLA server.
  • Remote license checkout
Perform a remote license checkout for a specified duration and simply e-mail a license file, as an attachment, to a remote user. They can then use QuarkXPress for the specified duration without connecting to QLA Server. This makes it easy to generate temporary licenses for remote users and freelancers.
  • Automatically transition to back-up server
During installation of the QLA server, the system administrator has the ability to define a back-up server for QLA. In the event of a failure of the primary server, the back-up server will begin serving Quark product licenses. Once the primary server is active again, the files containing information about license usage will synchronize in order to prevent unauthorized use and provide an accurate reflection of usage.
  • Extended license check out
With extended license check-out functionality, you can check out a license for a few days up to a few years. Once a license has been checked out, QuarkXPress no longer is required to connect to the QLA server upon launch.

Install QLA with ease

The level of detail in the installation instructions about the system and associated components is such that even a person with very little knowledge of server administration can successfully complete an installation.

Track license usage

Upon the creation or modification of a license-user pool, the system administrator can define a maximum duration for software license checkout. These values can also be defined at the user level. For example, when adding a user to the pool, the system administrator can define how long that user can have a software license checked out.
